Younee: Online Musical Sensation to Music Stardom
By Sunny Jung and Laura Leon

Younee

Younee started her unlikely music career as a video blogger on UCC (the Korean version of Youtube) while still in college. In addition to sensational music, her videos feature her talking about her love of music and her musical technique.

Future stars are increasingly carving out their own pathways to stardom on the internet, ditching the traditional hard trek through the record label system. The feasibility of online self-promotion has spelled a huge leap forward in this movement. Using online blogs, artists can literally get their music heard by tens of thousands, perhaps millions of fans. The technology allows them to sell their recordings without the backing of a major record label.

Younee is a perfect example of a rising star who did just that.

“When I was first introduced to MySpace by a friend from Hong Kong, I met so many interesting people and other musicians from all over the world,” says Key’s Piano.

Her first video clip caught the attention of many viewers and fans in Korea and made her an instant online star. Next, she joined MySpace and attracted even more viewers from all over the globe. The success of Key’s Piano within the MySpace community soon led to the development of her first album.

In early childhood, Key’s Piano was already enthralling audiences with her virtuosity at the piano. She was a child prodigy. The piano was like a family member to her while growing up because her parents were so busy.  Graduating with a degree in Instrumental Music, Key’s Piano later won many awards such as the UK Song Writers Competition, sponsored by the Brit Award.

“I want to be a musician that can feel and connect with the audience.  I want to make the kind of music that anyone can be inspired by and be able to understand,” explains Key’s Piano.

There are many, many talented and hard-working young artists like Key’s Piano that have yet to gain attention from the public. Possessing great talent, particularly in music, is no guarantee that fame will follow. Aspiring musicians need a cadre of behind-the-scenes professionals who can help them be heard. But beyond that, the question is whether the artist can connect with the audience in a way that makes them memorable.

One of the pianists she admires most is Elton John precisely for this ability to connect with the audience. As a singer/songwriter, she hopes to follow in his footsteps.

The Korean community is proud to have witnessed her career from its unlikely online inception, and very much looks forward to Key’s Piano’s blossoming career as she increasingly performs nationally and internationally.
